About these courses

Easter is well known as the time for students to vastly improve on the points that they received in their mocks. To help students take advantage of this valuable time, The Dublin Academy of Education (formerly The Dublin School of Grinds) runs intensive exam-focused Easter Revision Courses every year.

The sole purpose of these courses is to maximise students’ CAO points. To help students achieve this, our teachers have specially designed these comprehensive courses to cover all the key areas of their subjects, as well as their predictions for this year’s State Examinations. Mastering these aspects will give students the grounding and knowledge they need to achieve top marks.

Students who attend these courses will receive:

  • » 90 minutes of intensive tuition per day for five days with Ireland’s leading teachers.

  • » A focus on simple shortcuts to raise students’ grades.
  • » Strategies to exploit the critically important marking scheme.

3rd Year Business Studies

This course will give students the tools necessary to excel in the upcoming exam. Students will have an insight into the questions that will most likely appear. The course will be exam-focused. Students will also receive the “Holy Grail” set of notes, which will help them understand the examiners’ marking scheme.

About the teacher : As an experienced examiner, Martin Quinn brings with him a deep understanding of the curriculum and marking scheme. Martin's extensive knowledge of the Business Studies syllabus, complemented by his ability to relate to students, means he is fully equipped to prepare students to achieve their maximum capabilities.

3rd Year English

This course is built on the fact that almost half of all the questions students will be answering on is material that they have never seen before. Students will receive fully worked notes and past paper examples of the most popular questions. All notes place a heavy emphasis on the value of understanding the marking scheme, and on using that knowledge to write a well-structured answer for the examiner.

About the teacher : Michael Ruaidhrí Deasy is the Principal at The Academy and former head of the English department at The Dublin School of Grinds. He has been an advisor to some of Ireland's leading textbook publishers regarding the new English Syllabus, and has worked for The State Examinations Commission. In recent Leaving Certificate results, 36% of Michael Ruaidhrí's students achieved an A1. Nationwide, this figure was just 4%. This can be explained by his ability to teach English as a formula that every student can follow, eliminating the air of mystery, and sometimes confusion, around the subject and its marking scheme.

3rd Year French

Firstly, students will get notes focusing on likely essay titles students can expect to see. Exam-focused notes on all aspects of the exam will be given, covering the most likely questions which will appear in June. Finally, students will be given an insight on the DO’s and DON’Ts for exam day, focusing on simple shortcuts to raise their grade and also how to avoid the common mistakes that students make.

About the teacher : Lisa Fitzpatrick is the Head of the Foreign Languages Department at The Academy. She has written several Leaving Certificate textbooks, and is a member of the French Teachers' Association of Ireland. Lisa has given teaching workshops to teachers nationwide.

3rd Year Geography

This course gives students an insight into what they can expect during the exam. A key element will be to focus on the previous exam questions and also on how to pick up easy marks. Each student will also receive a full set of notes, which will be essential in improving exam grades.

3rd Year German

Topics are specifically chosen to ensure maximum choice during the Junior Certificate exam. Past Junior Cert and possible Junior Cert questions and solutions will be provided for all topics. Strategies to maximise grades will be discussed with particular emphasis on the marking scheme.

About the Teacher : Genevieve Farrell is the head German teacher at The Dublin Academy of Education. She has 14 years experience teaching German and is the author of "Complete German Grammar" text book. Her unique style of teaching instils confidence in students, by providing them with the skills and techniques required to master the German syllabus.

3rd Year History

This course will bring the students through all the key topics in the first, second and third year courses of the History syllabus. A detailed revision pack will be provided to each student highlighting essential course detail. Sample answers will also be provided. The layout of the State Exam paper will be explained, as will the marking scheme and the students will be coached in time-management techniques and how to claim higher marks from the examiner.

About the teacher : With over 16 years of teaching experience, Kieran Roche brings his extensive experience as a History expert to The Dublin Academy of Education. Kieran has worked for the State Examination Commission as both a corrector and an examiner, giving him a unique insight into the State Exams. As well as his work for the State Examination Commission, Kieran has been published in, and regularly contributes to, History Ireland Magazine. 48% of Kieran’s students achieved an A1 grade in a recent Leaving Certificate Examination. Nationwide, just 7% of students received an A1.

3rd Year Irish

This course is designed with the key objective of making this exam more approachable for students through developing clever answering techniques which will cover them for any question which may appear in June. Students will receive an exam day plan highlighting the DOs and DON’Ts for exam day, focusing on simple methods that they can use to raise their grade.

About the Teacher : Séadhan Perry is specialised in providing students with a clear, fundamental understanding of the syllabus and marking scheme. His teaching style is focused on covering the curriculum in a concise way so that students have the tools to successfully manage the likely exam questions. Séadhan is a popular teacher due to his ability to stimulate students' interest in the subject. Séadhan has worked with the state examinations commission correcting exam papers and last year was an Oral examiner for the leaving certificate. He has also taught in the Gaeltacht in Coláiste Ciarán and Coláise Ó Direáin.

3rd Year Maths (H)

By the time you leave this course you will have 285 past and likely exam questions, including fully worked solutions. Students also receive five booklets (one for each of the five sections of the syllabus). You will benefit greatly from a set of notes called ‘The Holy Grail’, which outlines how to take advantage of the marking scheme. Note: Students will also receive Carl’s predictions for Junior Certificate.

About the Teacher : Having worked for the State Examination Commission, Carl brings his reputation as an authority on the Maths Syllabus to The Academy. As a member of the Irish Mathematics Teachers' Association, he is a popular teacher amongst students due to his mastery of the Project Maths Syllabus, and is well-known for his ability to stimulate students' interest in Maths.

About the Teacher : David Lewis' ability to relate to students, engaging with them in ways that put students at ease, results in his students gaining a greater understanding of Project Maths. His teaching methods are unique and are tailored to the Project Maths Syllabus, meaning he is a specialised Project Maths teacher. David is a member of the Irish Mathematics Teachers’ Association, and is specialised in providing students with a clear, fundamental understanding of the syllabus.

3rd Year Maths (O)

With Project Maths beginning to settle, predictable trends are now being identified. We will show you the shortcuts to take full advantage of this. Each student will also receive a full set of notes on each of the five strands, which will be essential to improving exam grades.

His teaching methods are unique and are tailored to the Project Maths Syllabus, meaning he is a specialised Project Maths teacher. David is a member of the Irish Mathematics Teachers’ Association, and is specialised in providing students with a clear, fundamental understanding of the syllabus.

3rd Year Science

This course will ensure students get the most marks possible in a tricky, no choice exam where all questions must be answered. Students will study topics from all three sciences over the five days receiving The Academy comprehensive revision pack (a set of nine handouts of need to know material which condenses the wide course into a manageable amount). All notes are complete with every past paper question, a necessity before tackling this exam.

About the Teacher : David Lewis' ability to relate to students, engaging with them in ways that put students at ease, results in his students gaining a greater understanding of the Science syllabus. As an examination corrector, David is adept at understanding the mistakes for which students frequently lose marks. He is the author of several sample examination papers.

3rd Year Spanish

At this course students will get notes covering all topics on the course, with a specific set of notes highlighting the most frequent questions. Students will be guided through the exam layout, focusing on what topics must be prioritised. There will be a focus on how answers must be structured.

About the Teacher : Lisa Fitzpatrick is the Head of the Foreign Languages Department at The Academy. She has written several Leaving Certificate textbooks and is a member of the Spanish Teachers' Association of Ireland. Lisa has given teaching workshops to teachers nationwide.
