The Dublin Academy of Education (formerly The Dublin School of Grinds) provides weekly 1st and 2nd Year grinds in Maths, English and Irish which are 75 minutes in duration and are held in a class-based environment. Our grinds give students a head-start before they move to the Junior Certificate in 3rd Year.

Weekly grinds also include a special one-on-one service to all students, for a period of time before or after every class. This is a specialised, individual service, which we encourage all our students to take advantage of.

The foundation of our weekly grinds is ‘exam focus’. Our teachers strip away the unnecessary sections of each subject and focus solely on the core, examinable material, the aim of which is increasing students’ exam performance.

English

These English grinds focus on building the techniques and build foundations for the following years Junior Certificate Examination.

Gavin CowzerAbout the teacher: Gavin Cowzer is regarded as a leading English teacher in this country. Having developed a passion for this subject, including obtaining a Master’s degree, Gavin’s teaching style is focused on covering the syllabus in a concise way, so that students have the tools to successfully manage the likely exam questions. His experience correcting exams gives his students an edge in a subject which is often assumed to be an art. However it is clear that there is a strict science behind doing well in the English exam and Gavin’s students will be guided by this little-known fact.

Irish

As we are all aware this will be the first group of students to sit the new Junior Cert Irish exam. During this academic year Séadhan will prepare students to understand all the revelant changes to the course. At the start of the year Séadhan will explain what is expected now from students in this exam. Students will focus in on written work at the start of the year. Aspects such as grammar, verbs, stories and letters and reading comprehensions will be taught to build both exam technique and students confidence.

After Christmas students will then focus on the other new elements of the course such as reading and analysing stories, poetry, prose and novels. In each class students will receive detailed notes and sample answers to ensure each student has the confidence to tackle these types of questions. Students who attend Séadhan’s Irish class will be at a massive advantage for the following year as they will be both comfortable and confident in all aspects of the new Irish Junior Cert exam.

About the teacher: Séadhan Perry is specialised in providing students with a clear, fundamental understanding of the syllabus and marking scheme. His teaching style is focused on covering the curriculum in a concise way, so that students have the tools to successfully manage the likely exam questions. He is a popular teacher due to his ability to stimulate students' interest in the subject. Séadhan has worked with the state examinations commission correcting exam papers and last year was an Oral examiner for the leaving certificate. He has also taught in the Gaeltacht in Coláiste Ciarán and Coláise Ó Direáin.

Maths

The grind is focused on solidifying the common introductory course which is the bedrock of the junior certificate examination before extending this deeper into 2nd-year topics up to junior cert standard. This course design will allow students to progress linearly from any standard level that will give them the strongest possible foundation and mathematical confidence empowering them as they move into their all-important junior certificate examination year.

About the Teacher:  David’s ability to relate to students, engaging with them in ways that put students at ease, results in his students gaining a greater understanding of Project Maths. His teaching methods are unique and are tailored to the Project Maths Syllabus, meaning he is a specialised Project Maths teacher. David is a member of the Irish Mathematics Teachers’ Association, and is specialised in providing students with a clear, fundamental understanding of the syllabus.
