Teachers plan one-day strike

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland is due to go ahead with a one-day strike on Wednesday February 24th. The stoppage will see up to 350 schools affected. TUI executives decided on the strike at a meeting last Friday afternoon, citing concerns around the exploitation of newly qualified teachers as the main reason.

TUI president Gerry Quinn said that TUI members “voted by a margin of 89 per cent to engage in a campaign of industrial action to secure resolution to crisis issues.” Mr Quinn further stated that, ahead of next week’s meeting with the Department of Education, if “sufficient progress is not made, we will take strike action.”

The Union’s key concerns centre around what it calls the precarious employment status and income poverty of new and recent entrants to the profession and the continuing, damaging effects of cutbacks on the service provided to students.
