Figures released by the CAO have shown that Leaving Certificate students with bonus points for sitting the Higher Level Maths examination have a clear advantage when it comes to offers for the most desirable third level courses.
The extra 25 CAO points, awarded to students who achieve at least a D grade in their exam, all but guarantees applicants an offer for a Level 8 honours degree programme. In 2015, ninety-six percent of the 12, 290 CAO applicants who had the extra points were offered a place on a Level 8 programme. This compares with just seventy percent of Leaving Cert students generally.
The attraction of the bonus points can be most clearly seen in the significant rise in the number of candidates sitting the Higher Level Maths paper since 2011. Latest figures released by the State Examination Commission (SEC) show an increase of 11 per cent in this figure in the last four years, from sixteen per cent in 2011 up to twenty seven per cent in 2014 and 2015.
